This month, we launch our fundraiser
to provide chimney stoves to all residents.
Provided in partnership with the Maasai Stoves and Solar Project, these simple, fuel-efficient, vented cookstoves have proven to have a powerful impact on the health and quality of life of pastoral communities throughout the region.
This project not only empowers the women who lead the project and construct the stoves, but also protects children from asthma, chronic coughs, and burns. Once installed, villagers can stay warm and cook meals in a pollution-free environment. Far more compact than open fires, there is now more room in each building for family life and relaxation and less chance of children stepping on burning embers or burning their hands.
The stoves are designed to burn efficiently, using far less wood than open pit fires, saving an average of 120 pounds of firewood per week per stove. Just as significant is the time savings. The task of gathering and carrying 120 pounds of firewood, requires 10-12 hours per week. These hours are now freed up for education, child care, enterprise, and rest.
Chimney Stoves Save Lives
This project is the next step in our ongoing commitment to the health and empowerment of the Olmoti community. Nine Olmoti Maasai women have already been trained as installation experts to manage the project and construct the stoves, with guidance from the Maasai Stoves and Solar Project.
To date, we have completed 50 stove installations. Please help us raise $19,800—enough to provide the remaining 220 residences with a healthy, efficient way to prepare meals and stay warm.
The number to remember is 90
Each stove costs $90 in materials and labor.
Indoor smoke particles are reduced by 90%.
Carbon monoxide levels drop 90%.
Please donate whatever you can afford.
Help us reach our goal of $19,800 to complete this project.
